The most challenging aspect of doing this job, and having my own cosmetics company is not, despite what many people may think, creating the products themselves. That, actually comes quite naturally to me, as my college science background gives me the Chemistry knowledge of ingredients, and my makeup artist background gives me the expertise in color theory and HOW great makeup should function.
No, what truly Stymies me- and perhaps always will is Selling myself. Not my product, though it definitely affects that too, but myself as a brand.
I KNOW- my products are really great- enough of you have told me that it MUST be true, I use it myself both personally and professionally and to this day step back and shake my head and say- "Wow! THIS stuff really is good!"
Now, that doesn't mean it's for everybody- and that everyone is going to think it's God's gift (though I know to me it is!)
That I can accept- because makeup involves a lot of personal choice.
What I struggle with, is approaching vendors, or people to believe in my line enough to invest in it. I ask real money.
Don't get me wrong I DO it- because at the end of the day- my product is worth being made uncomfortable! And if they talk to me- and really ask me questions- they can SEE and HEAR just how passionate and knowledgeable I am about my line and makeup as a whole.
But- I can honestly say that it s hard- the most difficult- I am open, friendly, outgoing, outspoken, and even loud. am NOT shy! So much so- that people will have a hard time believing this next sentence- but it is 100% true-
I am VERY reticent about approaching ANYONE when it involves me asking for something if it will in any way benefit myself.
I know I am not alone in this- and I know that it's not charity I am asking for. I also know my business cannot succeed, let alone thrive and grow unless I continue to move past any reticence and DO IT anyway!
So while I will always grapple with this, and probably not jump on as many opportunities as I even should.
I will NEVER give up on doing it- and pushing myself outside this zone, because truthfully nothing worth having comes easily, and if I don't- well, really, WHO WILL? Plus I KNOW everyone deserves to have a FORTUNATE FACE!

Flattering colors for all tones!
Awhile back I was asked to do an on air Mass Appeal Segment where I spoke about Flattering skin tones, and choosing appropriate shades based upon your own personal coloring. We all know that there are just some colors that DO not look good on us, EVER! For me those shades are mustard yellow, olive green, & burnt orange- blech. They highlight (and NOT in a good way) my already somewhat sallow complexion.
There are the schools of thought, summers, winters- And a whole host of other company's that will give you a list of colors based on their choices of comparison criteria. Metals, seasons, etc
While I will not say any of these are WRONG, they aren't always the ideal for everyone, and many of them leave a LOT of colors OFF the list as well. As I mentioned, burnt orange or even an orange/yellow coral- NOT on my list- But a pinky orange, or Copper- You BET I can and WILL wear that! Same for yellow, mustard- nope, but a gold, even an patina'd gold yes- and it looks fabulous!!!! Even an olive shade as long as it contains a lot of Gold.
Basically- UNDERTONE matters!
There are two schools of thought in choosing great colors- complimentary, split complimentary, and analogous colors. Simply put this means a color opposite your eye shade, skin tone etc- that is VERY distinctive- and makes each color appear more intense, or vibrant. split compliments are those colors next too (on the color wheel) the compliment of the initial color- example Blue: the compliment is orange, and the split compliments are red-orange, and yellow-orange. The analogous color to blue are those in the same general color are- Blue violet, and blue green.
For my example you can see that with my skin tone having more yellow (sallow) undertone- Choosing the analogous Yellow green, or yellow orange- s probably not going to be my best choice- BUT choosing the complimentary or split complimentary color of violet- either as eye shadow- or a blush with cooler blue/violet undertones is going to enhance my skin tone! Now as I move closer around the color wheel in shade choices toward the yellow- choosing the shades that veer more blue, or cool toned rather than warm or golden toned- are always going to be the choices that enhance my own coloring. It's really only the analogous colors that tend not to flatter my skin. (yellow-orange & Yellow-green)
As for eyes- well mine are brown- and lucky us- brown eyes can wear ANY color- as Brown is a combination of all three primaries- red, blue, and yellow. So I always look to my skin tone to determine what looks best- AND also do I want a bolder more dramatic look- so Complimentary it is! (today I have on Indigo-which is a matte violet blue- It makes my brown eyes look like melted chocolate.

| Indigo And, conversely- that means brown can look fabulous on ANY color as well- it's simply a matter of finding the RIGHT shade. And when is doubt- choose a neutral, matte brown- like my shade Bittersweet-takes out the guess work AND browns are fabulous for pairing with your brighter colors to make the more wearable.  BittersweetWhen I want a more subtle or even monochromatic look I reach for the pinky bronzes. By adding a bit of red to the coppery bronze (red-orange) shade- I add that extra warmth and brightness to my skin and eyes. One of my favorites is Glamorous- a cheek shade- but one that can be used all over! (any FFM shade is safe for eyes- and most are also lip safe!)

Now as a general guideline- for brown eyes- anything goes- so pay attention to your skin- if you have a lot of redness- stay away from colors with a lot of red tones. or undertones and instead look for bluer-cool toned shades.

Fortunate Face Minerals gets NAKED!
We all know the popularity of neautral shadows- and MANY makeup lines have palettes and versions of these, one of the MOST popular being Urban Decay. They are not the first to do this, and most likely not the last. And boy it sure is purty....But I am a makeup junkie- and it all makes me drool.
Yes, I buy PLENTY of stuff that is not mine, it's a sickeness really.
But-I do keep coming back to mine all the time-because i have designed them to work exactly how I want them too-so I am kind of partial to them...Add in that I love the natural ingredients- and I feel really GOOD about using them to boot.

How to get Holiday Pretty
Achieving a gorgeous holiday glow is certainly within the busy girl (or guys) grasp! Even in the season of rushing, stress, lack of sleep, not to mention cold temmps, and drying indoor heat sources. All these can sap our skin of moisture and it's luminosity. Here are a few simple steps to make that skin fall in line, and Glow like those twinkly ornaments decking your halls. (or glow like your Hannakah Menorah, or Kwanza Candelabra) you get the picture.
#1 and this will always be my number one, drink water. period, finite' this will hydrate your skin from the inside out! It is neccesary, and life giving. Your body will shunt moisture to your vital organs first, and harsh weather will suck the rest from your skin- as will many artificial heat sources. I ADORE my gas fireplace- but oh boy- can I feel it literally sucking my skin dry! I love flavored sparkling selters- and they count with zero calories- so I indulge anytime- sans guilt!
To get this look:
Cheek & Lip color in Cheeky Mixed into our Uncolored Cream Base
Bare Luster Highlighter on cheekbone
Romance All over entire lid up to brow bone
Conquered eye shadow on lid only & undereye.
#2 Wear sunscreen. spf 30. Glare off snow and ice are strong!
#3 Consider changing the Type of makeup you use. if you are very oily- you may rejoice in the winter as your skin appears more "normal" But those who are combo, or dry- and especially mature skin- you may really feel the lack of moisture. Considering changin from a powder, or water based liquid foundation to a cream based, or liquid silicone based foundation MAY just be the change you need to add extra emollience- and create that, oft desired, dewey skin finish. Pairing ths with cream based blushes, creamy lip products- all tapped into skin with warm fingers- a makeup routine that can feel luxurious.
#4 Use thicker creamier moisturizing products. And look for hyuralonic acid as one of the ingredients. hyuralonic acid holds 400x it's own weight in water- and packs it up against your skin cells. it temporarily plumps lines and wrinkles- and with consistent use can dramatically approve ther appearance.
#5 Exfolliate. Be gentle. Use a Clarisonic, or your favorite scrub, even sugar mixed into a creamy wax/oil based moisturizer (works great mixed with a lip balm for a lip scrub too!)

Clean Skin Makeup
One of my favorite things that happens, and I am lucky enough that it happens a lot, is when in talking to someone, and they find out I am a makeup artist, and cosmetics company owner; and they immediately say "I need you, I love how- you are obviously wearing makeup (I ususally do my eyes pretty smokey), but your skin looks amazing, and like you dont have heavy makeup on!" I love this for two reasons.
One, naturally being I am a makeup artist- and this speaks to my skill. My personal face is one of my primary canvases. If I cannot do my own makeup well, and in a flattering manner, how could anyone think I could do thers well! I may even wear more makeup than someone else would like- i.e. that aforementioned smokey eye, BUT if it is executed flawlessly, and enhances my features rather than overwhelm them- people can SEE a great makeup job- and not necessarily just focus on the makeup itself, but rather the overall effect achieved BY the makeup. Which is the point of makeup on the everyday woman.
But reason two is even more gratifying, and this is the secret that I know- good makeup- particularly a high quality foundation is going to give you coverage, and smoother appearing skin without looking heavy or cakey- it will just look like skin!
We all have been introduced to the idea of HD cameras the buzz has been around for many years now- well guess what? Life is an HD camera! Our eyes are HD cameras! We can all see when someone's makeup is heavy and sitting on top of the skin, when it is very thick, pasty, the wrong color or texture, and when it is uneven, streaky, or unblended. It is why your foundation choice is so important, and where I tell women to not skimp on foundation- after all it's called FOUNDATION- and is the foundaton of the rest of your makeup look.
If you have perfect skin, or very minimal discoloration- you cna get away with very little on the skin- perhaps a tinted moisturizer, or een just a dab or two of a concealer here and there- blend out gently powder and voila" perfection! for those of you with this skin-Kudos (and I hate you a little)
But for those of us with much more to cover (and I am right there with you ladies and gents) we need a full coverage foundation- period. You need to find one with a high level of pigmentation which will give the coverage with less product- and that in a nutshell is what will keep you from needing to slather on a thick coating. Typically the well pigmented products are ones you will find in a pro makeup artist kit, and have names you have probably never heard of. I carry many of those in my kit as well- because they are amazing, and I love makeup and I WANT IT ALL *BWAH HAHA *insert manical laughter here.
But, truthfully, I use my Fortunate Face Minerals in Medium Dark Warm, day after day- this is always what I am wearing when I get those compliments. It is what I was wearing on my on-air tv segment when, after it aired, a gentelman hunted me down and hired to me to teach his fiance how to do her makeup because "I love her with no makeup but I'd seen you on Mass Appeal and you looked great and it didnt look like you had a mask on your face. Sorry but most women look like its Halloween 24/7."
High praise- I did indeed teach his beautiful fiance how to achieve this, and she was happy, and also purchased the products that I had used on her.
It happened again last night at a grand opening event for one of my FFM vendors where I heard "your skin just looks like skin, so perfect"
I will let you in on a secret- I have discoloration, a lot of sun/age spots (from zero sunscreen until about age 25-if I only knew!), broken capillaries next to my nose, large pores, and I still get blemishes here and there. But I know to use the right foundation, and the magic that it can bring-the right color, the right type and texture, and the right level of pigmentation for my needs. Get up close to a mirror- do it! and see can you see skin? some pores? Yes. Those few fine lines? Yup. It's not meant to erase them. Blur them? diminish them? Absolutely! but if you are seeing nothing but a thick layer of makeup? You need a serious do-over.
My most significant suggestion? Try it- before you buy it! samples are great way to see if youa re getting exactly what you need. Most counters, and websites will offer samples- sometimes free, or usually at a deep discount. Then try them, as many as you need to to get exactly what suits your needs best! With so many great lightweight formulas out there now- you CAN find one to help you achieve amazing clean skin makeup!

Clean:Brush Shampoo
I am always so happy to give a positive review about a product- because that means said product has met or exceeded my expectations- and that is exactly what this brush shampoo has done! All I can say is WOW!
In the interest of full disclosure, I know the owner, Jessicca Ochs. Fellow makeup artist, Jessicca, and I had never met, but were mua aquaintances on Facebook. Once I heard she was starting this product as an Indie Beauty formulator I made a point to introduce myself and offer any advice or help I could- as I believe strongly in Indie Formulators mentoring one another. We spent a bit messaging back and forth- and Jessicca truly put her all into the creation of this all natural product. Her Passion was palpable, even through the computer screen. I felt I had met a kindred Spirit- because any of you who know me- know that is JUST how I am about MY Makeup Line! We got to officially meet Last week at the New York Makeup Show- where we handed each other samples of our products for each to test out. The ONLY Stilpulation? Honest, constructive feedback. It is THE single most valuable service others can pay to my business, and I wanted Jessica, and Clean: Bruch Shampoo, to have mine.
So- here it is. I gave this brush cleanser several different tries- on several different days, to be sure results were consistent, I also used many types of bristles or sponges, and various types of makeup as well.
Overall this products rates as a- MY KIT WILL NEVER BE WITHOUT THIS! and frankly, yours shouldn't be either.
Jess- gave me both the olive oil based, and the goat's milk based- I washed half the brushes in one, and half in the other- eveny distributing them into equal types, and levels dirty. They performed exactly the same- so, in this instance, it will come down to personal preference- (Mine is olive oil simply due to diary allergies)
She also scented mine with Lemon essential oil, as citrus is always a big win for me- if you're thinking uh oh, fragrance? never fear- as she offers unscented- but the fragrnace is so light- and does not linger on the brushes at all- it merely adds a pleasant trace of aroma to mask any unpleasant wax or oil smell that some people don't care for.
Now, for the cleaning itself. I love the nice sturdy jars they come in- and she opted to go with the wider mouth so even large brushes can be swirled in without potential damage. I pre-wet the brushes- and added some water to the top of the soap in the jar- swirled- and worked it into brush and rinsed. I would then risne the top of the soap as well if needed. For mildly dirty brushes this was it- done- clean! super fast and my all time favorite aspect? Super clean rinse- I hate any residue feel left on brushes and these rinsed SO clean- But at the same time brushes were softer feeling- almost as If I had conditioned them- bonus! and it was all the hair types, badger, synthetic, taklon, Sable...and beauty blender too!
Now, I had a few uber dirty brushes (these were all my personal brushes)- several having thick cream makeup, or red goopey lipstick, and several w waterproof liner.- again- holy amaezballs! It def took more than one cleaning- but that is to be expected with brushes this dirty- I can say the less dirty ones cleaned up first try- and- a little tip for the super dirty ones? Wet brush, run through soap, work it in, let sit while you clean others- then come back to it. Letting the soap sits helps to emulsify any cream product worked deep into the brush- and cleans up even faster!
Once I was finished I rinsed the top of the soap, right in the jar, dried with a tissue, and capped to store.
Lastly, because of the all natural formula, which contains no harsh surfactants, no sulfites, and no alchohol- it doesn't strip brushes. The only thing anyone may notice is, due to milder surfactants, it may suds less, - but I will tell you, that is because it is working! Just like shampooing your hair- it doesn't suds up as much on dirty hair- that's because it is WORKING on cleaning the hair! I tried re-washing a clean brush and it sudsed right up- so this is also a pretty good indicator of when your brushes are clean!
All in all- I give this such an amazing thumbs up! Jessicca will be officialy launching her product on Monday, May 13th. I pre-wet the brushes- and added some water to the top of the soap in the jar- swirled- and worked it into brush and rinsed. I would then risne the top of the soap as well if needed. For mildly dirty brushes this was it- done- clean! super fast and my all time favorite aspect? Super clean rinse- I hate any residue feel left on brushes and these rinsed SO clean- But at the same time brushes were softer feeling- almost as If I had conditioned them- bonus! and it was all the hair types, badger, synthetic, taklon, Sable...and beauty blender too!
Now, I had a few uber dirty brushes (these were all my personal brushes)- several having thick cream makeup, or red goopey lipstick, and several w waterproof liner.- again- holy amaezballs! It def took more than one cleaning- but that is to be expected with brushes this dirty- I can say the less dirty ones cleaned up first try- and- a little tip for the super dirty ones? Wet brush, run through soap, work it in, let sit while you clean others- then come back to it. Letting the soap sits helps to emulsify any cream product worked deep into the brush- and cleans up even faster!
Once I was finished I rinsed the top of the soap, right in the jar, dried with a tissue, and capped to store.
Lastly, because of the all natural formula, which contains no harsh surfactants, no sulfites, and no alchohol- it doesn't strip brushes. The only thing anyone may notice is, due to milder surfactants, it may suds less, - but I will tell you, that is because it is working! Just like shampooing your hair- it doesn't suds up as much on dirty hair- that's because it is WORKING on cleaning the hair! I tried re-washing a clean brush and it sudsed right up- so this is also a pretty good indicator of when your brushes are clean!
All in all- I give this such an amazing thumbs up! Jessicca will be officialy launching her product on Monday, May 13th. In the Pink!
New pink shades will be appearing soon- (with uber cute names like Capricious, Cheeky, Breathless)....as will our new updated website! Pictures of all our eye colors have been shot- and the rest will be completed by next week! So excited for you all to see the new shades- and have a more interactive, user friendly site. We're also excited about new vendors that are in the works - and there are a few more fabulous announcements to come. Lipsticks have been launched in 3 of our vendors sites to an amazing response- so much so that i may have to step up my game and get them out to all the rest of you!

Cream Base
well it's pretty much been an eon since I've posted anything- so get ready for a nice long post with pics!
I have been diligently working on products- promoting the biz, launching into new places- like Skincatering In Chicopee, Ma (love them!) Plus still doing work as a makeup artist- being a mom w 3 kids in full time sports (yes- even summer), and managing to squeeze in a vaction to the Cape!
Well- i wanted to give a big intro to one of my newest products- my Un-colored Cream Base. It's chock full of naturally based oils and waxes- including Shea butter, vitamin e, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Squalane, Beeswax- just to name a few. So it sort of acts like abalm to your face- while at the same time allowing you to mix Any Fortunate Face Minerals powdered product into it to become a cream based makeup! Here's a pic- of how it looks, and how it will be packaged.

I am really thrilled at the versatility of FFM- Mix it in water or our moisture spray and it's a liquid-or airbrush formula and also makes shadow a liquid liner! Mix w moisturizer and it's a tinted bb cream, even my serum will work to make it gel- but this cream has to be my favorite by far! So here are some pics of it mixed into foundation, Prep Step 2 (my newest darker version of Prep Step eye primer and red/purpleconcealer) the only place I didn't use a cream is on lids- I always use it in powder form- because Eyelids tend toward oily- why add more!
So here's what I used for a basic look- with just a bright cheek and lip.
basically a 1:1 ratio for mixing- but definitely customizable a little less for light coverage- a little more for extra coverage.

That's my foundation I also took a smidge of Prep Step 2 and mixed that for undereye concealing- and used in powder form all over lid to brow.
Medium Tan & Prep Step2 in cream form. 1:1 mix
Next I mixed equal parts Hot Stuff (cheek color, but lip & eye safe as well!)
Such a pretty matte Hot Pink!
next I mixed Bare Luster into a tad of cream- the smallest smidge- I used dry on the inner corner of my eyelid- but cream on cheekbones, center of nose, chin, cupids bow of lip- it could easily be added to foundation to act as all over luminizer- Another thing I love about the powders- mix whatever you want with whatever you want!
So you can see on metal pallete are the 4 colors I mentioned and swatched- on round plastic pallete you'll see what else I used.- in center- more medium Tan- powder form- because I need extra coverage I like to set my cream makeup with itself- yeah- you heard me! It can be set with either regular powder (like my Luxury Sheer-pictured here) or itself- for more coverage and color intensity! Which is what I did with Hot stuff (powdered in round palette)- I went over lips with it- to intensify and mattify the lip color! (it's darker in person- a true matte hot pink-prob. due to my camera's flash- or that I don't take the best pics.) I also used Bittersweet- the matte brown to lightly fill in my brows, and Embrace- lighter pink brown that is a brand new color- to dust onto my browbone. I then did a quick dusting of Luxury Sheer all over- love the way that diamond powder softens fine lines and pores! here's the final look.
And yes- it is all photo safe- whether powder, cream, airbrush- when formulating we intentionaly avoided ingredients known to cause problems in flash, or film- and we also we careful to use ingredients in proportions and percentages- that were suitable for profssional use! Wow!
What a busy time- yes new website designer has been chosen!yay! launched into a new store- Skin Catering, in Chicopee Mass. (soon to be of South Hadley, Ma but more on that later!) and another one in the works! More pros requesting our line to try out- YIPPEE! lots of photoshoots, proms, weddings, bodiour session (hey they pay the bills), and plenty of other great stuff! Including meeting with my city's business coordinator to discuss grant options. My studio workspace is usable and on it's way to being completed. Super busy- but happy about it all!

What's up?
So here's what's been going on and why you haven't heard much from me lately!
I had to fire yet another web designer- no it's not me- I can't have a new site Designed in Flash- it's going the way of the dinosaur and a complete waste of money! So in the process of consulting with a new designer- pics of all those lovely new colors I keep talking about are taken- by my wonderful photographer friend Matt Harrison. So hopefully we can have this up and going soon with better features to make it easier, and more fun- all around! One thing I can promise- is there will be a fabulous promotion as soon as this sucker is launched!
I have also been busy with filling orders through several stores that now carry FFM's products as well as many pro artists as well! (Our products even made it to MB fashion Week this year!)
Several other products are in final stages of development and testing- such as skin care items such as a face repairing cream, an all over face, lip & eye balm- and we're really excited about our uncolored cream base- that will now convert ANY FFM powdered product into a cream version! you heard me- all you dry skinned gals! New colors!
Available Soon!
Some new colors just created- inspired by Pantone's color of the year Tangerine Tango, but also by a need in the FFM line for colors with more golden orange, and coppery tones. Everything from Tangy- a bright shimmery golden tangerine- we tweaked it more gold than electric orange like a true tangerine shade- to make it a little more wearable, while still offering that pop of brightness! Secondly we've had several requests for a deep golden green- so we re-vamped our Gutsy to fit the bill- and let me tell you brown eyes look amazing with this color smoked out! Lastly-our color Patina- our newest obsession- we've been wearing it the last few days OMG! a medium brown that rubs down into a satiny copper- Unbelievable- we could not be happier with this shade! wear alone or with black liner and lots of mascara for a rich pigmented eye. All three of these colors would wear well together as a trio- Prime lids with prep Step all the way up to eyebrow. Place Tangy on inner third of lid as brighter highlight in inner eye. Using an angled liner brush-use Gutsy as liner, either wet or dry, at lash line on top and bottom. Smudge. Lastly place Patina in outer corner of top lid and smudge up and over brow bone blending out as you move up.

Color advice

Hi:
I always have trouble to know what color eye shadow and liner I should wear. I am 65 and still love to do my eyes. I have fair skin tone, and green eyes. What color of shadows would flatter my eyes more and what color eye liner should I be wearing. I always wear black eye liner which is a pencil. I would love to order your product but I am having trouble trying to figure out what colors would be best. Should I also wear brighter cheek color since my skin is fair.
I would appreciate any help.

Hi Rosanne, i'm so glad you contacted me. Green eyes always look most stunning and vibrant in any purple shade. It doesn't have to be a deep or dark purple-light colors work too. My color Fig is a great example of a lighter grayish purple that i use very often of women over a certain age. Another color i love for lining the eyes is my FFM shade of Invincible which is a deep brown with purple undertones.( my powdered shadows can be used as liners as as well) Rich plums- like my Passionate is another great choice ( you can see all these at http://www.fortunatefaceminerals.com/ and even if you choose not to use my colors- you can see the shades to get an idea of what to look for. If you still prefer a pencil- try a brown shade rather than black- it warmer and adds a richness that black does not. As for cheek color- brighter colors- that are sheer- to allow your skin tone to shine through tend to give the most youthful look- My colors First crush (bright pink) or Poppy (bright peach) are 2 great ones. Contest winners
Well- i hosted a makeup give-away for reaching my 300th "like" on My Fortunate Face facebook page! the winner Was kayla O' Meara- who has still not responded to my message. i will message her a thrid time- and if no repsonse by Christmas- I will choose another name! I also pulled a second prize package for referrals- and the winner was Kyle Keck of Pa. I know Kyle has a fiance' so I hope he put sit under the tree for her- since FFM makes a great present- esp since they come packaged all pretty- just like getting a gift when you order!
The winners received all three of my newest colors including Scintillating, Indigo, and Smitten, as well as the newly improved Pink Flush cheek color that imparts a sweet pink glow to the cheeks.
I have been rocking Scintillating quite a lot- it's a beautiful matte purple/brown. it makes a great liner and smudged into the out corners of my lids it really warms up complexion while adding much needed depth.
I will be hosting another- bigger makeup give-away- as we push toward reaching 500! So be on the lookout- you could be the next big winner!

Well- it seems I took a vacation!
it has been some time since I wrote anything at all here- or posted recent pics in my professional MUA blog- http://karriewelchmakeupartist.blogspot.com/ I am more than overdue! I do have a good excuse- really!
e sold out house in June-, but the one we were buying fell through (on seller's end) the day before we were to move in! With no place to go- my family and I spent 48 days living in a hotel- until we could find, purchase, close on, and move into another house! i'm happy to say were are all moved in- and LOVE our new home- but that was an experience like no other- and one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, frankly.
So anyway- the cosmetics line- Fortunate Face Minerals is doing well- and continuing to gain recognition- which is fabulous! I have also been lucky enough to appear several times as the resident beauty expert on a local television program- which also increases my brand recognition. I am still working to develop my lipsticks- which are great so packaging is the newest hurdle- got new labels- so I'm almost completed with them. I also am still tweaking my newest lipgloss base- which i think will be perfected soon- as well as cream based mineral makeup- (customizable to boot!) and i am pretty happy with my airbrush formula- which I will just need to offer for sale- so much to do and so little time! Stay tuned for the announcement of these products!

Fake that Sun!
many of you may have already heard that the FDA has changed rulings on the labeling of sunscreens. The first change, is one I long suspected- simply because it makes a certain amount of sense, and that is no sunscreen may claim to be waterproof, Sweat proof, or call itself a sunblock as these terms "overstate their effectiveness". I don't know about you, but I have always felt the Waterproof claim made no sense. I have slathered myself up with a creamy lotion, or sprayed myself down with a sticky spray, yet invariably after swimming neither creamy, nor sticky feeling remains- leading to the logical conclusion that, while some may have been absorbed into the skin, most of the sunscreen has been washed away. This same ruling states there may not be of more than 2 hours of wear without re-application, and can not make claims of instant sun protection at moment of application without submitting data and obtaining FDA approval. (you all know you're supposed to apply sunscreen at least 1/2 an hour BEFORE sun exposure right?)
Another piece of the new legislation is that Only those passing FDA testing may claim broad spectrum protection, and also claim "to prevent skin cancer & early aging, If used as directed and with other sun protection measures." which to, essentially reads cover completely with hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sit under an umbrella and MAYBE, it will work. That sounds comfortable at the beach doesn't it?
IF clams to water and sweat resistance are made the label must state a time frame of effectiveness in and out of the water, or through sweating.
Lastly the FDA is wishes to limit the spf value of all sunscreens to 50+ as they feel no data shows an efficacy above this value. Companies are, however, open to independent testing of higher values, and submitting results to FDA for approval. So that spf 70 you thought was keeping you from over exposure- may not be giving you quite the protection you thought.
So here's the breakdown:
1oz of sunscreen is the required amount to cover the average person. (enough to fill a shot glass)
Apply liberally at least 1/2 hour BEFORE sun exposure
re-apply after swimming, sweating, or at least every 2 hours
look for broad spectrum which protects against both UVA and UVB rays
if you do burn, or wish to limit sun exposure further, cover with light clothing, hat, and sit in shaded area.
layering sunscreen products does not increase spf value. ie. layering an spf 50 and an spf 30 lotion will not result in an spf 80, but rather the value of the highest product, in this case spf 50.
which means you may stay out in the sun 50 times longer than if you wore no sunscreen whatsoever. Most sunscreens work by either absorbing the ultraviolet rays ( this is most typically the non-chemical barrier style sunscreen like Titanium Dioxide, and Zinc Oxide (as long as NOT nano particulate) if they are non-nano they will have a somewhat whitening effect on the skin- and the heavier zinc creams can be very whitening, but are a great choice for those areas that burn quickly (remember zinc white noses?)
The chemical sunscreens, as well as zinc and titanium in nano form (I encourage you to find my archived post on nano's and why I avoid them) are clear in application-they tend to reflect rays as their method of protection, but both forms have aspects of both types of protection. A mix of both barrier and chemical, in my opinion, would probably be the most efficacious system of sunscreen available on the market.

New Post!
So sorry- I have been crazy busy- But I haven't forgotten you! We're in the process of moving- and I cannot wait until it is done an my head will stop spinning with all I have to do! regardless- i wanted to check in and let you know what's going on.
I completed my trip to California- and the makeup Bootcamp I ran there. I also had a chance to re-connect with Kaila Westermann- owner of TKB trading who is one of my raw ingredients suppliers, and her wonderful husband Trung- they are such generous and kind people- and I enjoyed spending time with them both seeing their wonderful city. They also kindly opened their home to us as well on our last night- and even lent us a car! I only wish we lived closer to one another to get together regularly. Kaila is actually the one who recommended me to teach the class- and I'm grateful to her for that. She also gave me wonderful words of encouragement that truly touched my heart. Thanks Kaila- it means a lot coming from a very successful business woman such as yourself!
I also got to spend time with Julie Pries- who flew in just to be my teaching Assistant for the bootcamp- she is one of the loveliest, and funniest people ever- and I adore her! Anything I needed- boom she was on it! A big ole' Myuh to ya Julie! I still owe you product- I haven't forgotten!
Thanks also to Lori Nova for opening her studio to me as well as her home! the view from her deck is incredible! You can see all 3 bridges in San Fransisco! Sitting out there with a glass of wine was the perfect way to relax after a long day teaching! I hope her husband returns from Quatar soon.
When i returned I had about a week to prep for launching into the Wandering Peacock- which was successful- and fun- such a cute place with lots of unique items- ever time you turn around you discover a new little treasure there! Colleen, the owner is sweet- and supportive of local crafters and artisans. I suggest you check them out if in the area 33 Cottage St Easthampton, Ma.
I then taught a makeup application class at Simply Skin 52 Court St. Westfield, Ma. I had a wonderful time- all the women asked great questions, were willing models, and enthusiatic learners. I will be doing this again- at all my different vendors. the next will most likely be at Raine's Boutique and Gallery- 209 Shaker Rd. East Longmeadow, Ma. Stay tuned for the day and time TBA, and after that- at The Wandering Peacock. We can also be found at Choice Health -307 East Main St. Westfield, Ma. The gals there (Trish- a makeup artist And licensed esthetician, plus Chelsea and Katie) are really great at assisting in product and color choice- and they all wear- Fortunate Face Minerals- so they are experienced! We keep the displays compact at each store- but any color (like flirty girl shown above) can be special ordered and delivered at no extra charge. we also offer custom coloring option where everything will be designed for your unique complexion and needs. I also got to spend time with Julie Pries- who flew in just to be my teaching Assistant for the bootcamp- she is one of the loveliest, and funniest people ever- and I adore her! Anything I needed- boom she was on it! A big ole' Myuh to ya Julie! I still owe you product- I haven't forgotten!
Thanks also to Lori Nova for opening her studio to me as well as her home! the view from her deck is incredible! You can see all 3 bridges in San Fransisco! Sitting out there with a glass of wine was the perfect way to relax after a long day teaching! I hope her husband returns from Quatar soon.
When i returned I had about a week to prep for launching into the Wandering Peacock- which was successful- and fun- such a cute place with lots of unique items- ever time you turn around you discover a new little treasure there! Colleen, the owner is sweet- and supportive of local crafters and artisans. I suggest you check them out if in the area 33 Cottage St Easthampton, Ma.
